Abstract
Background: Hypertension is an abnormal increase in blood pressure that can be a major cause of heart
disease, stroke, kidney disorders, visual impairment, and cognitive decline. As a result, healthcare workers
often provide education regarding blood pressure monitoring to help control existing risk factors. Purpose:
This study aims to obtain an overview of the incidence of hypertension in Bawasalo Subdistrict. Methods: This
research used a descriptive quantitative design. The study population consisted of all residents of Bawasalo
Subdistrict, Segeri District, Pangkep Regency. A total of 388 respondents were selected as the sample. Data
collection was conducted from July to August 2022 using a paperless approach with KoBoToolbox, through an
interview-based questionnaire. Data analysis was performed descriptively using SPSS software. Results: The
findings showed that out of 388 respondents, 40 had been previously diagnosed with hypertension, and 37 of
them (78.7%) did not take medication regularly. In terms of behavior, 46 respondents (11.9%) were still active
smokers, 257 respondents (66.2%) rarely exercised, and 171 respondents (44.1%) frequently consumed salty
foods. Conclusion: Hypertension remains a significant public health issue in Bawasalo Subdistrict. Public
education is needed to increase awareness about the causes of hypertension and effective prevention strategies.
