Abstract

Background:Subjective fatigue is a condition characterized by a person's feeling of tiredness, making it difficult to perform their job effectively. Fatigue can lead to decreased work productivity and an increased risk of workplace accidents, including fatal incidents. Stevedores (dock workers) are part of the labor force engaged in the provision of services related to maritime transportation. The diverse loading and unloading activities at Jayapura Port have led to numerous complaints of work-related fatigue among workers. Purposes: This study aims to analyze the relationship between length of service and working hours with subjective fatigue among stevedores at Jayapura Port. Methods: This research employed an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 734 individuals, and a sample of 88 respondents was selected using Slovin’s formula. Accidental sampling technique was applied. Data were collected through the Subjective Self Rating Test (SSRT) questionnaire and anthropometric measurements, including body weight and height. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods, with the Chi-square test (significance level p = 0.05). Results: The findings showed that 65 respondents (73.8%) experienced subjective fatigue, while 23 respondents (26.2%) did not. The majority had a work tenure of more than 5 years (79 respondents or 89.7%), and 56 respondents (63.6%) reported working overtime. There was a significant association between length of service (p-value = 0.001; PR = 13.781) and working hours (p-value = 0.003; PR = 4.896) with subjective fatigue among stevedores. Conclusion: Length of service and working hours are factors that influence the occurrence of subjective fatigue among dock workers. Port authorities are encouraged to implement work-hour regulations to prevent excessive workloads that may lead to workplace accidents.
