Abstract
Background: The nutritional needs of infants can be optimally met through the provision of Breast Milk (ASI). Exclusive breastfeeding supports the growth and development of a child's intelligence. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of age, ethnicity, education, occupation, number of children, marital status of breastfeeding mother in Waena District, Jayapura City. Methods: The type of research used was quantitative with a descriptive type. The population was mothers who had babies as many as 124 mothers and the number of samples was 55 respondents. Data were obtained using a questionnaire and analyzed univariately. Result: The results showed that most breastfeeding mother at age of 26-30 years, as much as 20 respondents (36,4%). Based on the indigenous Papuan tribe, there were 33 respondents (60,0%), history of education as college students 20 respondents (36,4%). The majority of jobs as housewives were 41 respondents (74,5%). Based on the number of children, the most had 2 children, as much as 19 respondents (34,5%) and there are 40 respondents (72,7%) who are married. Conclusion: Breastfeeding behavior in Waena district is quite good and needs to be maintained.
