Abstract
Background: Smoking cases now not only target adults but also teenagers and even elementary school children. One of the reasons why children start to be exposed to cigarettes is the ease of access to cigarette and the support of pocket money. Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify access to cigarette among elemtary school students in Jayapura Regency. Methods: This research used descriptive quantitative methods with a cross sectional approach. Total sample consisted of 363 respondents. From 12 elementary schools. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling. Result: This study found that 13.2% of respondents have smoked, the majority of reasons are curiosity. Most respondents' pocket money is less than 10,000. Regarding access to cigarette sellers, 54.1% there were no cigarette sellers at school, 57.0% there were cigarette sellers outside the school and 72.5% admitted there were cigarette sellers around their house. Conclusion: The smoke-free area regulations in Jayapura Regency need to be strengthened to reduce children's access to cigarettes.
